The Elementary School of Christ, Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Manchester, Missouri
History
At the founding of the parish in 1971, the religious education of the children was conducted through the Parish School of Religion. Within a few years enrollment had increased to 450 students. In addition, nearly 100 students from the parish were enrolled in nearby parochial schools and private Catholic schools. Early in 1977, Father Vincent Stolzer summoned all parishioners to attend an informal meeting to assess the interest and discuss the feasibility of building a parish elementary school. The interest was overwhelming! A building fund drive was soon in progress. By the end of the year, enough money was pledged to begin construction of the $1 million school. In June 1979, a benefit concert, open to the public, was held at Powell Symphony Hall. It featured Lou Rawls and Nancy Wilson and netted an additional $22,000 for the school building fund.
Groundbreaking ceremonies took place on September 24, 1978 for the new parish elementary school at 417 Weidman Road. The ceremony was conducted by the Reverend Monsignor Cornelius J. Flavin, V.F., Pastor of Immacolata Church in Richmond Heights and dean of the Southwest St. Louis County Deanery. Participating in the ceremony were the Reverend Monsignor John L. Leibrecht, Ph.D., super intendent of schools for the Archdiocese of St. Louis, the Reverend Vincent A. Stolzer, pastor of Christ, Prince of Peace, the Reverend William A. Scheid, associate pastor and the Reverend Richard L. Neumann, administrator of John F. Kennedy High School, who had assisted in the parish since its founding. Other members of the clergy, religious and laity were in attendance.
The school was designed by the architectural firm of Stauder, Fine and Bildner. The new facility included a kindergarted and twelve classrooms, library, clinic, faculty lounge, ancillary offices, kitchen and cafeteria. The school opened for the fall term of 1979 with an enrollment of 180 children in grades kindergarten through seventh. Sister Marcella Polizza, ASCJ, was the first principal of Christ, Prince of Peace School. From 1980 - 1988, the school was staffed by the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and lay teachers.
